The Story Behind the Stories
How Big Blue Blob Came to Be
One autumnal day in 2022, I was on uncle duty. My niece was over and the morning flew past and suddenly lunchtime was upon us. I decided to put my five-star chef skills to use and cook Isabelle some food. I emptied my colouring pens on the table and gave her lots of paper to keep her occupied while I cooked.
Three hours later, I had prepared some delicious beans on toast and Isabelle had drawn, and named, Big Blue Blob. I put him on my fridge, and over two days, decided to write him a story.
Once the story was completed, I offered a few more babysitting sessions for my niece to come over and, over time, she illustrated the rest of the book.
She is currently working on the next book, and I am still cooking incredible beans on toast!!
Meet the Characters
Who's in the Big Blue Blob stories?
Blue
Blue starts his journey unsure who or what he is. As the story develops, he relies on his many friends for help. He asks questions, seeks advice, and listens carefully. Slowly, his confidence grows. As his confidence grows, I wonder how his behaviours will develop.
Red
Red is full of energy, forthright and confident. He is a great friend, but sometimes he can get quite cross, you could say he sees red! Luckily, he has his friends around to help him regulate his emotions and find his happy place.
Yellow
Yellow is one of Blue's quieter friends. Sometimes she seems like she doesn't want to do something or isn't enjoying an activity. Often it just takes her a little while to figure out what is going on before she fully invests her time.
Green
Green is very chilled. He is often seen relaxing on the swings, lying on the grass, or reading books. He has a wonderfully calming influence on all of the Blob friends. The kind of blob you want as one of your own friends.
Purple
Purple is the wise old sage. He may not always have the answer, but he certainly knows how to help you find it. He is a real confidence building friend. A wealth of knowledge and always helpful.
Orange
Orange is as bright as her colour suggests. A real go-getter. Happy on her own, happy to see friends, and always enjoys a big get-together. Like flowers need the sun, I think the Blobs need Orange.

Wow, wow, wow! This book is absolutely amazing. I work in a nursery and bought the book for the little ones there. The story is incredible, well written, adorable illustrations and it's easy to follow. The story flows so nicely and the colours make it so eye catching. Not only is the story itself fabulous it gives our youngsters the support in learning colours. I know this story is going to be a favourite at work! 5 stars from me.
This is a adorable book that teaches children the importance of speaking out when they have a question and knowing that they can be who whoever or whatever they want to be. The illustrations are absolutely lovely, especially knowing they were drawn by another child. They're cute and make the book stand out with lots of different colours. The writing style is simple for a child (mine is four) to repeat them back to you, but while they're learning to read, the large pictures are helpful enough to tell them what is going on and encourage their reading skills and enjoyment of reading. I love that there is space for kids to draw their own blob at the back too! My son who is particularly loving drawing and colouring at the moment is going to love that!

What a beautiful book. Big Blue Blob can't decide who he wants to be! A super story to begin those discussions with children on "we can be anything we want to be" with a little help from our friends. Highly recommend.
